Rhythms & Flavors of the Summer Solstice

Celebrate the longest day of the year enjoying the rhythms, flavors, and sceneries of the season. Set in the scenic Finley’s Landing Park, this family-friendly gathering will honor the beginning of summer with a full sensory experience: you will walk and wildcraft on a guided hike, make your own herbal mocktail to enjoy, and participate in (or enjoy the music of) an interactive drum circle on the beach, complete with a summer bonfire. This fun, unforgettable Solstice event is brought to you in collaboration by Dubuque County Conservation Board, Centrally Rooted, and Taproot Apothecary.

Pedals & Petals

Pedals & Petals

Come celebrate the summer solstice with a beautiful bike ride along the heritage trail while we learn about and collect Elderflower together. You will learn about elder folklore, about the flowers’ medicinal properties and energetics, and elder’s ecological connections.

What to Expect

We will discuss ethical wildcrafting practices, proper plant identification, harvesting, and processing techniques of the flowers before venturing out to harvest along the Heritage Trail. Once our flowers have been collected, we will head back to Heritage Pond to make an Elderflower Cordial for each participant to take home! Instructions on straining and usage recommendations will be provided. There will also be a premade (non alcoholic) cordial and Elderflower tea for everyone to try and enjoy together while we prepare our concoction.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet and are encouraged to bring their own scissors or small clippers. All other supplies will be provided.

The event will end by 8:30 pm, but from those brave enough to stay longer, Scandinavian legend states that if you sleep under the Elder tree the night of the summer solstice, you will be ferried to the Fey kingdom...
